○ Our Services
How we can
help you
We offer a range of scanning services to suit each individual producer.
● Pregnant / Empty
A simple scan that identifies if the ewe is pregnant or empty.
● Foetal Aging
Scanning for foetal aging gives an indication if the ewe will lamb early, mid or late. A useful tool to split or tighter your lambing.
● Triplet / Twin / Single
Scan identifying ewes that are empty, single bearing, twin bearing or triplet bearing.
● Combination
Depending on how you manage your flock, we provide a combination of services to best suit your scanning needs.
○ About us
Jeff & Enya
Jeff Southall based in Kingston SE has been scanning ewes in South Australia and South Western Victoria for over 30 years.
Within this time, he has trained many upcoming scanners, including his daughter Enya.
Enya started scanning in 2022 based in the Adelaide Hills and Kingston South East.
Between the two they are both highly regarded sheep scanners that are reliable, cost and time effective.
There is no job too big or small.
○ Benefits
Why Scan?
Scanning provides valuable insight into the pregnancy status of your flock—whether a ewe is empty, carrying a single, or expecting multiples.
With this knowledge, farmers can manage and feed their ewes according to their specific requirements.
Key Benefits
● Higher survival rates for both ewes and lambs
● Improved flock fertility
● Greater efficiency and profitability
Ultrasound scanning also helps with targeted nutrition planning, pasture management, identifying non-pregnant ewes for culling or re-mating, and organising labour and resources more effectively.
Are you interested in holding an information session/forum?
This can be done online or in person.
○ Pre-Scanning
For optimum scanning
results
○ Ensure ewes have been off feed & water 6 hours prior to scanning.
○ For any supplements (for example grain, hay, silage) 24-48 hr prior to scanning. This ensures the rumen has been emptied and is not encroaching on the pregnancy.
When should you scan your ewes?
The best time to scan depends on the joining period.
● Twins: Scan within 90 days of ram introduction.
● Triplets: Scan before 75 days.
● Wet/Dry status: Timing is more flexible.
Some producers choose to scan at around 60 days to capture the first three weeks, then return later for a re-scan.
For longer joining periods, we can draft rams off with the dries which can be rescanned at a later date if needed. This often works well when timed alongside maiden ewe scanning, as they are often scanned a little later than the main flock.
